Profile

Collins Arch is probably the most distinctive skyscraper constructed within Melbourne in the past decade. Occupying an entire city block, the building consists of two 164 meter, 34-story towers conjoined at the summit by an eight-story, tapered skybridge, with the tapered nature of the towers and bridge creating a series of expansive terraces. At the base of the building, between the towers, is a public green space. The building's unusual design was in response to planning regulations seeking to limit shadows cast upon the Yarra River to the south. The design has not gone uncriticized, however, with some derisively referring to the building as a "pantscraper". The Arch is a mixed-use building, containing offices, apartments and a hotel.
